Here is an example of how to save a book. I bought it with no front or back covers and loose pages.

Now I have rebound it and covered it in a faux red leather and the inside pages with marbled paper. It's a cook book from 1739 and you can read it here or download the PDF thanks to Google.

While looking into how Wedgwood Jasper pottery was made I found that the figures where cast in a mould, then glued onto a pot with slip. I had the idea then of how elegant they would look as white and dark chocolate and how the process is the same.
So here are some ideas for packaging and designs using some Jasper designs.

Record Bowls

I have tried making record bowls in the past and it is good fun but for the Oxfam shop I work in, I thought I would make some for them to sell! These are the records we can not sell [without covers, valueless, defaced covers].

As it is for the shop I wanted them all to look similar so I found an old hanging basket from the 1950s to mold them on to, it had to be an old one as it is not coated with plastic that would melt in the oven. This way I can place the record on top of it and it will melt in the oven onto the side bars. This this method I can make them look the same, evenly spaced and change the width, I have some for unpeeled fruit and some for pot-pourri.

From the pictures you can see the basket, oven and finished products in many stages. The end result was a nice star shaped bowl, available from Oxfam Sidney Sussex Street branch soon!

My friend Shaun Wallace has set up a mobile recording business and he asked me to make him a website. It needed few pages and to look unique and fun!

I made him a 'marvellous machine' made out of musical instruments based on traditional travelling fair organs to keep the mobile theme and used bunting to show his name. I made a light background of rainbow colours focusing on the machine with a burst of brightness in the centre. Finally I used a '.pgn' to mirror the machine as if standing on a glass floor, in an Apple store style. With Animation Shop 3 I edited the animation partials of the website such as the organ and amp lights. This is an explanation of how I created this video.

First I took some film I shot of of ink in a water tank then using Brightness, levels and a chroma keyer I removed the grays from the background. Then I inverted the film and rotated it 180degrees. Finally I added a sparkling effect.

I thought I would point out what I do with the Project Faust videos and how I make them. With this video I had some film from Wales of the coast. I had the idea to make it like a WW2 film.

I made the video black and white, edited on a WW2 war ship, then added some reflections in the water. Finally I made the original video very red, before the black and white, this makes the black and white film appear to be night time with black and white film.

Having seen some of my work I was supplied with the three images of Beth and her musicians and given the text in a word document and told to do whatever I thought suited the artist's style, what was wanted was a rustic feel. I used some images from old printers example book and photoshopped other images and scans to make most of the artwork. The CD tray has images behind a clear tray and a butterfly in the centre where the CD is placed.

The main album type is done with the Fontin Family. You can see the text on the CD took some time to do but worked out great! You can buy the CD here: www.bethwalthew.com

One of my favourite books. I used some images from my Holiday in California that I turned into prints, ( the book features a lot of traveling in California and across the United States). I chose two of my prints but in the end settled for the blue stop sign print and added it to Adobe InDesign with the typeset Penguin header. On the left below is the new version from the Penguin Classics series.

Another of my book cover self project. This time Graham Greene's Stamboul Train. I rather dislike the style of illustration that goes with the original book [left] and I tried a few variations on the covers design as you can see at the bottom of the post. I ended with my simpler form with train tracks and an outline of Istanbul's most famous landmark. I used Adobe's InDesign and Illustrator.

Temporary Graffiti

Blackboard Paint Graffiti.

Using blackboard paint on a wall, you create a contained area for graffiti that can wash away
with the weather, so the graffiti/information on it is always changing and can be easily removed with rain, water or a dry cloth. Blackboard paint costs £2.41 inc VAT at the cheapest I have seen. All you need is to screw a small piece of wood to the wall for a chalk shelf.

Book Cover: The Other America

Along with my self project of re-designing book covers I started with 'The Other America'. I chose to design this away from the typical Penguin typeset header as the original did.

My final version is below on the left, Penguins version is on the right. I chose to use the fencing pattern to show liberty was not always open to all. Three of my other ideas for this cover are at the base of the post.

Book Cover: Guide To London

Along with my self project of re-designing book covers I took up 'The Penguin Guide to London'. I started to cut out images of landmarks and to layer them on each other in collage. I did some printmaking with the image [at the bottom of the post]. Then I had the idea that as tourists would use the book to add a fun twist; a die cut in the centre of the book with a hole to attach a holiday snap to like people used to put their faces into pier and fun fair attractions. Examples below.

Brave New World is a novel by Aldous Huxley, written in 1931. Many people have designed covers for this futuristic book. I half toned image of a Brutalist building and used two colours to design this cover. On the right is the first edition cover of Brave New World.

Here Before?

I saw this book cover for 'The Space Merchants' and I had seen something like it before! In fact in the Orb's album 'U.F.Off' from 1998. The Book comes from 1973. Maybe it's a fluke, maybe not, I wouldn't be surprised to find the Orb as fans of science fiction.

Book Cover: The Soft Machine

The Soft Machine is the title of a novel by William S. Burroughs, first published in 1961. It was originally composed using the cut-up and fold-in techniques, this inspired my design on the cover. Taking a photo of Burroughs, cutting it up and shifting the edits around. I think it is as abstract as the original [right], but still communicates the name and title well.

Another book cover here. Like before I remade the text header in InDesign and created the image in Illustrator, this time also using Photoshop. I left the 3'6 off as on my version of the book it's stamped on. The image is a variation of some prints I had made. My version is on the left, the original is on the right with 3 and 6.

I took the book 'How Children Fail' and decided to rework the covers design. I created the original heading and typeset style to pelican books in Adobe InDesign then used Illustrator to make the images. I ended with two samples that I considered strong enough using images from wikipedia re-edited, working my own images into the designs. The Original cover is below in red.

Below is the cut out I used to make the Hedgehog. What I did was fold a page in half. Then Cut out one side of it from the centre, that way the other side is identical. Then I just added a mouth, eyes and some prickles with a Biro. It's the same way to make a Dog and Cat.

From Nothing is a little name I'm giving to a set of craft posts on what to do with an A4 page of paper. This is the Chicken. With a craft knife I cut into the page the shape of a chicken, then using 'v' shapes I make feathers. Using my thumb bent the 'v' cut back so it became more three-dimensional. Naturally you could always paint the chicken before or after.

I was thinking back to children's books I had when I was a child on things to make and do, and I thought about making skittles with A4 paper and a toilet roll and some glue. These are what I quickly came up with. I ended up giving the skittles numbers for points to tally when you roll a ball at them.

The Never Ending Story

Never ending drum loops on a record with a loop molded into it that doesn't end. Unlike most records that play in grooves from the edge to the middle, this record has five loops cut into it, the idea being it could be used for the base of another piece of music or music mixed into it or just for a long playing sound. It could be done with any sound lasting from three seconds to one second.

5 Minutes of Fame

Two reel to reel machines are linked in a circuit, one on record the other playing the reels. The tape is wound around chrome chair legs with elastic bands above and below the tape to keep it in place, these make sure there is a long length of data to record on to, the tape is wiped and played as it goes around, no information is stored 'cause of the recorder. People who go up to the microphone can record a message that will give them five minutes of fame as it will be broadcast with the speakers on the other machine, then loops back to the recorder that wipes it out.

Other suggestions:
(i) The microphone can pick up anything from room ambiance of be placed in a different area like out of an open window to bring the noise of what's outside in.

(ii) Placing a Korg Kaoss pad between the microphone and the recorder and putting it on the beat matched scrambler effect, this cuts up the sounds it records while reversing parts to make a rhythmic noise.

My idea for a set of china plates playing with traditional designs and patterns.
I imagine the sale of these to be in a pick and mix set from a shop, so you could have a set being all the same plate or a mixture. As with my other plate designs all the colours, dimensions and glazes are the same.

I have long been a fan of Spode china. I find the engraving and printmaking of the designs very interesting. I made some lines designs and edited them to make a set of plates, all the same shape, dimensions and colour, so although with different crosshairs and designs they run in a theme and make up part of a dinner set. I'm working on other designs at the moment as well.

Hastings Beach

After seeing the BBC show 'School of Saatchi' last week the contestants had to make some artwork for position on stone Hastings beach. I came up with this idea: It's a large piece of reinforced glass moulded into a large Fresnet lighthouse lens with a metal frame on a concrete base. The public could look out to sea with the warping of the glass as well as it being like a circus hall of mirrors, so as well as decorative it's fun! Being on a stone beach it wouldn't be a risk to fire. Below are two diagrams, the first is how the lens works with light when in place in a lighthouse, the other in grey is an example of how the class is molded.

Saatchi's six chosen artists are commissioned to produce large-scale pieces of art for the seaside resort of Hastings. When their work is constructed on the seafront in Hastings, the artists come face-to-face with the public and have the pleasure of discovering what they think. The final judgment on the artists' success or failure is down to Charles Saatchi and his panel of advisors.

Ever wanted to open a paint can but you have now screw driver? You cant use a hammer, a spoon bends, a axe is silly. So my new idea is to put a screwdriver on the end of a paintbrush, that way you don't need to look for one :)
