Thoughts on Janet Jackson.
I was thinking if I would save Janet.
Well step one.
Work with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis even for a few tracks, then any record company might see some singles in that, out of your 6 #1 albums they gave you Five of them. Say if you record four tracks that still leaves 10 for other producers. Janet's not been bad at getting producers in and making good stuff, one of the most interesting tracks from Discipline is where the track samples Daft Punk all the way so its not like she's doing anything with the recordings wrong but as Ragan Fox once said “Janet, leave the pussy alone” basicly, stop going on about sex, being sexy isn't the same thing as talking about sex.
Also make sure your the cute sexy pin up, the strict sex dominatrix look doesn't work for you and it puts more people off, this might have been so with disciplines front cover. It's okay for Madonna to do it, after the Sex book the public are just happy to see her with any clothing on, but Janet's pop has always been more innocent and to appeal the mass audience back it must come, save the sexy looks for W magazine or Vogue.
So with the writing and the look out of the way I would suggest three things.
1:A greatest hits album. Design of a decade +. Just call it Janet Jackson Greatest Hits. A Name like design of a decade puts off the message Janet's the star. Now how all the singles from control to Discipline, record two extra tracks to feature on each cd, 'cuse this will be a 2cd set job.
Dont order the tracks in time line, arrange them in order of feeling. With the post love for Michael make sure Scream gets on the play list. There is room to re-order and take out some of the tracks. The two new tracks are so fans still buy it for the new things (Something Madonna didn't do with GHV2 - Maybe why it sank).
| CD1 New Track 1 | CD2 New Track 2 |
With this album as a 2cd or maybe 2cd + dvd set you get some VH1 and MTV specials, a lot of press and you would have only recorded two new songs for all the money you get from it.
Stage 2#
The re-release.
Every one of your albums has a ton of remixes and normaly a handful of b-sides.
So re-release them all as Digitally remastered tracks on a 2cd + dvd set.
CD1 The Original Album
CD2 The B-Sides and Remixes
DVD The videos, some making of's and maybe an interview on the album production and legacy.
